Florida’s Best Kept Golf Secret?

One of the best kept golf secrets in Florida is the private Inverness Golf & Country Club, located south of the city of Inverness off U.S. Highway 41 in Citrus County.

Although now 50 years old, the Inverness Golf & Country Club still maintains a small roster, less than 250 golfing members, and a no-tee-times policy for members. Members, men and women, can tee it up anytime they desire, except when there is organized play. Some examples of the organized play include women’s day on Tuesday mornings, men’s day on Wednesday mornings, and a monthly couples tournament. Most members participate in these events as well as other play.

The course is an 18-hole fairly level layout that is rated 71.1 from the blues, 69.4 from the white tees, 66.9 from the gold tees, 71.3 from the red tees, and 66.8 from the silver tees. It is nestled in a setting of large oak trees, pines, palms and a few cedars that can get hookers and slicers into trouble. Water hazards come into play only on two holes on the front side, eight and nine, and two on the back, fourteen and fifteen, although errant shots can find lateral hazards on several other holes. All 18 greens were replaced in the summer of 2006.

The Club started as a lot sales operation in the early sixties and is fairly well built up. However, there are some vacant lots for sale both on the course and nearby, by private owners and realty firms, as well as a number of new and re-sale homes.

Inverness Golf and Country Club membership currently is composed of Junior through Senior Golfers, and many members who are still active in the area’s business and professional community. Non-resident & temporary memberships are available.

Members can own their riding carts and commute from home to the course to play and back by playing an annual trail fee. Cart storage is available at a small fee for members who live too far from the course to utilize cart travel. Daily rental and leased carts are available, too, and members can walk as they play if they desire.

In addition to the 18-hole golf course, the club offers a club house with restaurant and lounge; pro shop; swimming pool; lighted tennis courts; driving range and practice putting green.
